Stable Imp/Exp with Emerging Benefits of Structural Adjustment

From:Date:2021/05/19 10:05:12

China Customs data show that in 2020 China's sewing machinery sector has accumulatively created an import and export trading value of 3.34 billion USD, increasing 0.51% compared with the previous year, and a trade surplus of 1.39 billion USD, falling 0.26 billion USD compared with the same period previous year.

I. Overview of export

Dropping on the whole with a U shape trend

Stricken by the novel corona-virus pandemic, the export value of sewing machinery sector in total has declined 4.94% year on year to 2.36 billion USD in 2020, which puts an end to the continuous growth in the past 4 years; it has dropped slightly before reaching the bottom and bouncing back in Q4.

II. Situation of the export destination

Changes happen to market structure, and some areas grow against unfavorable situations

In 2020, the export of sewing machinery to each continent and key market has free-fallen because the pandemic has dealt a heavy blow to Asian apparel and shoemaking markets like ASEAN and south Asia countries. In contrast, China's export of the same to markets in East Asia, West Asia, Europe, US, etc. has skyrocketed benefiting from the relocation of European and American orders to neighboring industrial chains and the increasing demand for pandemic control supplies.

III. Product categories

Export of industrial sewing machinery falls while that of household sewing machine rises

Regarding particular product category, industrial sewing machinery still makes up a large proportion of the exported sewing machineries in 2020, constituting 44.04% of the gross export value created by the sector, which is 5.33% lower than the same period previous year. With a clear division of product categories, the export of industrial sewing machinery drops on the whole while that of household sewing machine rises against the odds.

IV. Provincial/municipal export situation

Zhejiang tops the list, and Canton & Shandong's shares rise

Shown by data published by China Customs, Zhejiang still exported the most sewing machineries among Chinese provinces (cities) in 2020, and it has created an annual export value of 1.12 billion USD, decreasing 10.17% year on year; its export value makes up 47.50% of the total amount, declining 2.76% compared with previous year; Shanghai, an annual export value of 0.34 billion USD falling 15.49% year on year, an export value percentage of 14.16%, falling 1.78% year on year; Canton, an export value of 0.25 billion USD increasing 1.62%, an export value percentage of 10.60% increasing 0.68%; Jiangsu, an export value of 0.1 billion USD falling 0.29%, an export value percentage of 7.22% increasing 0.34%; furthermore, Shandong, Hu'nan and other areas' export of sewing machineries have grown at a two-digit rate.

V. Export trading manner

Slight drop of general trading volume

According to data released by China Customs, China's sewing machinery sector in 2020 has yielded a general export trading value of 1.93 billion USD, falling 5.48% on year-on-year basis; it makes up 81.65% of the total sectoral export value, declining 0.46% compared with the same period previous year. So, general trade is still the key manner of sewing machinery export. Moreover, processing with imported materials, and processing have delivered an export value of 0.24 billion USD, dropping 20.99%, a sharp decline; small amount cross-border trade and other trade rise year on year.

VI. Overview of import

Mounting demand for high-end equipment

The pandemic has promoted the down-stream sectors to become digital. As a result, the domestic demand for imported digital equipment like advanced intelligent cutting bed, spreader has kept growing. China Customs data has revealed that China has in total imported sewing machineries worth of 0.97 billion USD in 2020, increasing 16.80% compared with the same period previous year, and marks the highest level so far (see graph 5 and table 5 below). In particular, pre-sewing and post-sewing machineries have seen falls in import volume but rises in import value; the volume of the same has fallen 3.89% to 18.4 thousand sets while the value of the same risen 30.28% to 0.83 billion USD.

VII. Conclusion

Looking into 2021, how the pandemic will evolve globally is still up in the air, the course of Sino-America collision is opaque, and the recovery of world economy is shadowed by uncertainty and unbalance. As many countries around the world lift their lockdown in the second half and consumptions in developed countries are expected to resume, the export of sewing machineries will hopefully keep improving, and the demand for the same in traditional major markets along the "Belt and Road" will go up.
